How to Start Organizing Smaller Events Now (And How I Can Help)

Planning an event—even a small one—can feel overwhelming. You have a great idea, a vision of what you want to create or just love the idea of the potential results, but where do you even start? Should you focus on the content? The tech? The attendees? The benefits a summit will bring? How do we wrap our head around the unknown and yet dive in knowing that it will be a beneficial event?
The good news? You don’t need a massive budget or a huge team to create a powerful, engaging event. What you do need is clarity. Clarity on the focus, the purpose and the mindset that this too shall be a marketing and networking test that will give you more insight on how your business and topic is received by your audience.
Whether it’s a small workshop, a live training, or an intimate mastermind, a mini-summit, a well-planned smaller event can make a huge impact. Start small but START. And I’m here to help you make that happen.
Where to Start with Smaller Events
If you’re thinking about hosting a live event but feel stuck, start with these three foundational steps:
1. Get Clear on the Purpose
Why are you hosting this event? What transformation do you want attendees to experience? A great event isn’t just about sharing information—it’s about guiding people through an experience that leads to action. Note that I am focusing on your audience, not on your KPIs (key performance indicators for the business)!
Think about:
- Is this event meant to educate, inspire, or sell?
- What will attendees walk away with?
- How does this event fit into your bigger business goals?
Your event doesn’t need to be flashy; it needs to be focused. A well-defined purpose makes everything else easier.
2. Keep the Format Simple
One of the biggest mistakes I see? Overcomplicating things. Don’t stress about having fancy tech or trying to do too much. Make your first event simple and build from there.
Some easy event formats to start with:
- A live Zoom training with a structured Q&A
- A small mastermind where attendees get hot seat coaching
- A focused workshop with interactive exercises
- A mini virtual summit featuring 2-3 guest experts
Pick a format that fits your strengths and is easy to execute. Small and impactful is better than big and overwhelming both for your and for your audience.
3. Nail the Promotion Plan
Even if your event is incredible, people won’t magically show up. You need a simple, effective promotion plan.
A great place to start:
- Send 3-5 emails to your list with clear benefits (yes you have to have a good relationship with your email list)
- Post behind-the-scenes content on social media to build excitement and build your list
- Offer a fast-action bonus for those who sign up early
- Personally invite past clients or engaged followers
People need multiple reminders before they commit. And if your event is valuable, it’s your job to make sure they don’t miss it!
Here is the BTS (behind the scenes), you need to build and automate everything that is possible; from registration page, to sign up, excitement and reminder emails, potential sales emails after the event.
